Dick Thompson presents award

December 3, 2001

Fly Creek, NYOn November 28, 2001 newly re-elected Otsego County Representative Dick Thompson (D-Milford) presented the Fly Creek Cider Mill and Orchard a proclamation of resolution #295 recognizing the Mill for receiving NYS’s 2001 Agri-Tourism Business of the Year Award.

Dick Thompson said, "recognizing the Fly Creek Cider Mill & Orchard for this award reaffirms our County’s commitment to agriculture and its important link to tourism. The Mill is a real gem to our community and I’m one of their biggest fans. I was honored to secure this recognition for them from the County." The Mill, being a combination of both agriculture and tourism, is a leader in Direct Farm Marketing and Agri-tainment both of which are the future for family farms in this area. Otsego’s tradition of farming can be sustained by innovative operators who have a will to explore new ideas in diversification such as the Michaels have done. Bill Michaels, co-owner of the Mill says, "We are overwhelmed by the County’s proclamation and we feel encouraged that our growth and development as both tourist and agriculture institution are looked upon favorably by the County Board of Representatives. Next year is my family’s 40th year of operating the Mill and this award is a great shot in the arm for our next 40!"
