Rotary to Raise Thousands for Local Charities
Fly Creek, NY – The 14th annual Cooperstown Rotary Club AppleFest, September 18 & 19, 2009 attracts over 4,000 people annually during New York’s peak apple harvest time. The Fest is a fun, fall celebration including family-focused activities, gourmet apple pies, fresh apples, cider, antique tractors, and the lively music of some of the area’s finest musicians, all held on the grounds of the renowned Fly Creek Cider Mill.
AppleFest will be held from 10:00 a.m. until 5:00 p.m. Saturday and noon until 5:00 p.m. on Sunday. Admission is $2 and children under 12 are free.
Rotary will distribute every dollar raised at Applefest to local charities. In 2009, AppleFest raised more than $14,000, and the event organizers hope to exceed that goal this year. Money raised in 2009 was distributed to many local charities, community service organizations and projects to assist at a time when all are feeling the effects of a struggling economy. Many area businesses have stepped up with donations, all of which support important charities throughout the county.
The Fly Creek Cider Mill has a turn of the century waterpower cider mill, which is a fascinating family attraction. The Cider Mill is supporting AppleFest to the tune of several thousand dollars through the use of its facility as well as by donating cider and contributing toward event promotions.
Over a dozen unique, tractors will be on display. The Antique Tractor Parade kicks off at 8 AM on Sunday. There will be a complete line-up of live musical entertainment throughout both Saturday and Sunday.
Returning events on both days will be the ever-popular children’s games: “Pumpkin Painting” and “Build your Own Scarecrows.”
In addition, a raffle and silent auction will be held with many wonderful prizes donated by local businesses.
Both days the Fly Creek Cider Mill & Orchard will be holding cider pressing demonstrations of its 121 year-old water-powered Boomer and Boschert press. Apple lovers may sample fresh varieties including McIntosh, Ginger Gold, Gala, Cortland and Paula Reds. Bill Michaels, owner of the Fly Creek Cider Mill, says, “We are pleased to have the Cooperstown Rotary Club and the community be the beneficiaries of AppleFest. Being able to support the club as an event sponsor is our opportunity to thank our many customers who have chosen to make the Mill a traditional fall family destination.”
