On the Road Again…
Mill team members tour Western NY for new ideas
Fairport, NY - The Fly Creek Cider Mill & Orchard team members and friends chartered a motorcoach on Saturday to tour markets and wineries in Western New York. The tour started with Wegmans Supermarket’s flagship store in Pittsford just east of Rochester. Wegmans, a family owned chain of 66 stores, is an industry leader in innovation, customer service and merchandising. The team toured the store’s produce and gourmet specialty food areas where breads are baked in a wood-fired brick oven and freshness prevails. The next stop was Casa Larga Winery where the team learned how grape wines are made and how to properly sample them. At Geneva’s Red Jacket Orchard the team sampled fresh sweet cider infused with fresh fruit juice. Ideas were picked up from Red Jacket’s climate controlled apple display area and the team was much impressed by the modern cider press that is quite a step from the Mill’s 1889 water-powered press. Next stop was Montezuma Winery in Seneca Falls that specializes in fruit and honey wines. The team tasted blends of cranberry and honey, raspberry and apple and blueberry that are all created from New York produce. The last stop was the Turning Stone Casino in Verona which has grown to become New York’s third largest tourist destination. There were some winners in the group and everyone decided that their best luck was at the grand buffet. The group returned home flush with food, fun, but most important, fresh ideas.
Every spring the Mill hosts what they call a "voyage of discovery" by taking the staff to different locations to tour farm markets and retailers to gain new ideas for merchandising the Mill’s products. This year’s ideas will be incorporated into the Mill’s retail expansion that is currently under way. A new floor layout has been created to more effectively manage traffic flow while showcasing more New York Products.
The Mill will reopen for its 148th season on May 13 with this new look and layout as well as plenty of those ideas from Western New York.
