The Fly Creek Cider Mill will re-open for its 157th season this Saturday, March 23, with lessons gleaned from the North American Farmers’ Direct Marketing Association’s tour and conference held in Portland, Oregon.  Over 400 farm direct marketers attended the annual event from across North America.  A tour feature for Bill Michaels, co-owner of the Fly Creek Cider Mill, was a stop at Bob’s Red Mill in Milwaukie, Oregon where the group toured the retail store and spoke with founder Bob Moore about the growth of his successful Mill.

“I was inspired by my conversation with Bob about how he developed his Mill, similar to our own, into a food destination,” says Bill Michaels. “He has built the brand into a successful business while keeping the theme true to its history.”

Three conference days proceeded with idea sharing among successful agritourism farm businesses that included a presentation by the famous Pike Place Fish Market team.   The conference highlight for Michaels was the first place win for the Mill’s full-color brochure among many entries from the US and Canada.

The ideas gained by the conference will be implemented this season strengthening what has become a destination for central New York foodies with more than 40 daily samples of specialty foods including extra-sharp, mill-aged cheddar, apple and corn salsas and Mill-made fudge.  The Mill will continue its tradition of tempting taste buds with its delicious cider, apple wines, hard ciders and fresh-baked pies.

A new event this year is the inaugural Cider Run 5K Fun Run/3K Walk fundraiser to benefit the United Way of Delaware and Otsego Counties.  The race will start and end at the Mill Saturday, April 27 at 10:00 am.  Participants who pre-pre-register before April 1 will receive a commemorative tee-shirt and pint glass filled with hard or sweet cider upon completion of the race.   To pre-register for the race visit or call the United Way at (607) 432-8006.

The Fly Creek Cider Mill is located 3 miles from Cooperstown and 24 miles south of Herkimer just off State Route 28 in Fly Creek.  For more information, programming and events or to request a copy of their award-winning brochure visit or call 800-505-6455.
