The American Wine Society (AWS) held its annual wine competition in Pocono Manor, Pennsylvania October 31 – November 2, 2017. Sponsored by the AWS, the largest and oldest organization of wine consumers in the Country, this competition is one of the best-regarded commercial wine competitions celebrating producers from across the Country. Wines are judged blind by panels of certified judges and wine industry professionals.
In the "Sparkling" class, one of over 80 categories, the Fly Creek Cider Mill's Non-Vintage JUICY SWEET SPARKLING HARD CIDER was awarded the only Gold Medal in-class but was edged out for "Best of Class" honors by a Barefoot Sparkler from E & J Gallo of California. Of all the wines entered only 6% received a Gold Medal.
According to Fly Creek Cider Mill's Consulting Winemaker Dave Edwards "We knew we had a very well-made sparkler but wanted to see just how it would compare to commercial wines from the larger producers. We knew going in that we would be playing in the "big-boys sandbox" and that makes it extra special that we can hold our own in that arena."
Bill Michaels, co-owner of the Fly Creek Cider Mill noted that "This is the second year that Juicy Sweet has been offered and has been well received by the public. It is made completely from a unique blend of New York State apples pressed right here at the Mill on our 1856 water-powered cider press. Dave Edwards then works his magic, concentrating the juice and slowly fermenting at a low temperature, transforming it into a medium bodied, well-balanced hard cider while retaining the apple flavors and aroma. The low alcohol cider, with a noticeable amount of residual sugar, is then carbonated slowly to assure small and long lasting bubbles."
Juicy Sweet Sparkling Hard cider makes a wonderful sipping drink, but is also at home with holiday meals be it turkey, ham or pork. It is ideal as a special toast to bring in the New Year.
Juicy Sweet Hard Cider is sold at the Mill, open daily – all year.
